About David Kuraya
Originally from Maui, I come from a
family deeply rooted
in music. I started learning the trumpet 12 years ago.
Continuing my passion for music, I directed Kahului Union
Church’s family choir from 2002-2006.
I went to college at
Whitworth University in Spokeane, Washington, to major
in music and minor in Theology.
College
at Whitworth
provided many opportunities which included traveling
across the West Coast with the Wind Symphony,
Jazz Band, Orchestra, Brass Quintet and Choir.
I also had the chance to serve as Dorm representative,
Off-campus Senator, and ResidentAssistant
at Whitworth.
In
addition to school, I was the Worship Ministry Coordinator
at Knox Presbyterian Church from 2006 to 2010.
By God’s grace, we built a praise team there made up
of mostly the youth. These kids grew enough as musicians
that in 2008, they led worship for a conference of
all the Presbyterian pastors in the inland northwest.
Upon
going to college, I also started learning sleight of hand
from a few local experts, books, etc. By my senior
year
I was performing regularly at private clubs, coffee shops,
universities and opening for touring comedians.
The
largest show I did was for 750 students. This past
summer
I was the house magician at the Five Palms Restaurant
in Kihei, Maui.Manoa Valley
Manoa Valley has always held a special place in my
heart.
In 2000, I went on my first youth camp to Camp
Lanikamahau
which was hosted by Manoa Valley.
I remember
meeting Kel Hamada there. It was at that camp that I
accepted
Christ into my heart. I met Pastor Anne once
before
on Maui at the Christian Book
Store called
"By The Book" where I used to work. My uncle Russell
Ishida is the choir director
at Nuuanu UCC where Anne was pastor. Pastor Makana Milotta
and I both are Whitworth
Alumni.
Dear
Manoa, when I look at all these things, there is no mistake
in my mind that God has led our stories here
together.
I look forward to continuing collaboration with you
in ministry!
To
God Be the Glory,
David
